Petition Summary and Background The American Academy of Pediatrics has continuously endorsed breastfeeding as the optimal form of nutrition for infants and as a foundation for good feeding practices. The breastfeeding of a baby is an important and basic act of nurture which should be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child health. Why care about Breastfeeding Legislation? You or someone you know may have been in the unfortunate situation of being told that you cannot breastfeed in a public place. No woman should be subjected to the embarrassment of being asked to leave or to retreat to a restroom. It is your right to feed your baby anytime, anywhere. Forty-three states have a law protecting the rights of a women to breastfeeding in a public place, regrettably Michigan is not one of them.
